Flintlocks Help Joe Schott Celebrate 100th Birthday

The Flintlocks celebrated Joe Schott’s 100th birthday on Thursday, February 17, 2022. Joe has been active in this volunteer group for 33 years since retiring from Bells Labs.

He recruited many of his friends to join, and even a few relatives.

Joe is a Navy World War II veteran; he helped prepare the ships for the Normandy Invasion.

Joe has a wry sense of humor, so the group presented him with a parking plaque which reads: “Reserved Parking Only for Flintlocks Over 100 Years Old.”

The picture above shows Joe seated next to the parking sign with a birthday cake in front of him. His Flintlock friends and a few relatives surround him.

The Flintlocks are a group of retired Scouters who devote every Thursday all year-round to helping the Scout camps. They build cabins, make picnic tables, paint the dining hall, do maintenance and build craft kits for the Scout shops.

The Flintlocks represent a wide range of skills, including two electricians, a millwright, carpenters, plumbers, diesel mechanics, police officers and HAVAC, as well as many professionals such as a dentist, two college professors, computer experts, financial advisors, salesmen, etc.

The Flintlocks meet every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camp Winnebago in Rockaway. Guests are always welcome.

National Retires Space Derby Program

Unfortunately, due to ongoing supply chain issues, Space Derby kits were eliminated by the supplier, and after reviewing membership participation over the last several years, the decision to retire the Space Derby program has been made by National.

If a pack or den is planning a Space Derby event, there is still inventory at the Kurland Family Scout Shop in Cedar Knolls and at the Mountainside Scout Shop while supplies last. Patriots’ Path Council’s national distributer inventory has been depleted, so these items will not be replenished.

When finally gone, raingutter regattas are great alternatives to a Space Derby event. And for those Scouts who still dream of “racing to the stars,” classic solid fuel rocket programs are also an option.

Fishawack District Plans Pinewood Derby

The Fishawack District Pinewood Derby will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Patriots’ Path Council Service Center, 1 Saddle Road, Cedar Knolls.

Cost is $15 to participate. The derby is open to any Cub Scout who came in first, second or third for their rank at their pack’s Pinewood Derby.

Registration opens April 1; click here to register.

Save the Date for Family 5K Run/Walk

Join Patriots’ Path Council from May 23 to June 5, 2022, for this year’s Patriot Family 5K Run/Walk.

You can choose when and where you wish to participate. Invite your family and friends. Scout units can make a fun day event and help raise funds for Patriots’ Path Council.

Funds raised by a unit will count toward its 2022 FOS goal! All proceeds will benefit the local Scouting program here in Patriots’ Path Council.

This year we will be collecting your virtual times and all participants will earn a patch. There will be more information to come, and registration will open toward the end of March.

Klondike Derbies Cross the Finish Line

Scouts from Patriots’ Path Council made good use of this winter season.

PPC held eight different Klondike Derby events, with 1,266 Scouts and 438 adults participating.

The council also had many adults who took part as volunteers for the event, running towns/stations. What a great way to get the Scouts outdoors!
