Yo Ho Ho and a Bucket of Fun

Pirates of the Caribbean was the theme for the recently held Raritan Valley District Cub Family Camporee. The event was held June 8-10 at Camp Akelaland (Minsi Trails Council, BSA) in Pennsylvania. Over 470 Scouts, siblings and parents from 15 packs gathered for a weekend of fun. Scouts and their families participated in BB shooting, archery, sling shots, ropes and knot tying, swashbuckling pirate skills, a fishing derby, canoeing, gaga ball and pirate crafts. Twenty-three Boy Scouts from 7 troops across the RV District served as staff support, helping make this a truly memorable weekend.

The weekend included a campfire show put on by “Captain Jack Sparrow” and his first mate. During the show the cub scouts learned how to talk like a pirate and a scout from each pack was taught pirate swordsmanship. In the end, all the scouts were made honorary pirates.

Thanks to all the volunteers who planned, supported and led stations for the weekend: Jake Hardin, Brent Cheshire, George Bicking, Carmine DeSan, Chris Lakatos, Kristen Lakatos, Brandon Griswold, Gene Schafer, Harry Buttito, Ryan Maziel, Frank Zatika, Victor Haddad, and Larry Prezioso.   Thanks to our EMT team, led by Mike Richards for the support and advice in helping make this a safer event.  An extra special thanks to Dave Dey and Troop 41 for coordinating and feeding the staff.

Knights of the Munsee Roundtable

Knights of the Munsee Roundtable was the theme for the recently held Munsee District Spring Cub-E-Los. The event was held June 8-10 at Winnebago Scout Reservation. Over 370 Scouts, siblings and parents attended. Scouts and their families participated in activities centered around the theme of the knights of old.

Scouts got to try their hand at pool noodle jousting, javelin throw, catapults, chariot races, archery, and slay the dragon. There was also a water bucket relay, a fishing competition, lion Nerf archery and a pack iron chef cooking competition.

Thanks to the Cubelos team of Trish Plummer and Scott McCabe for chairing the weekend. Thanks to all the volunteers who planned, supported and led stations for the weekend: Packs 53, 68, 73, 75, 83, 145, 163, and 178. Thank you all for your support. See you in the fall!

Raritan Valley District Flag Day Celebration

For many years when Somerville, NJ celebrates Flag Day the Raritan Valley District hosts a class of one of the citizenship themed merit badges. This year instruction was given to 69 Scouts for the American Heritage merit badge. Thanks to Troop 83 assistant Scoutmaster John DuBose for leading the instruction and Troop 83 committee member Thompson Mitchell for assisting. Scouts from all over the Patriots’ Path Council met on the green in front of the historic Somerville Court House. They also assisted with a presentation on the history of the U.S. flag. The Scouts watched as 75 immigrants took the oath to become naturalized American citizens, along with viewing other various displays on US history and culture.

Barriers to Abuse

SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

Summer is a good time to regroup and make plans and changes for the next Scouting year. We strongly urge that unit committees and leadership teams meet and review the NEW Barriers to Abuse (Pages 1-4, Guide to Safe Scouting) that will be published during June.  Along with the requirement for all Scouters to complete the new YPT training significant changes have been introduced into unit leadership requirements and operation.

How will your Scout unit Make Safety of Members Its First Priority?
