The fifth annual Munsee District Chess tournament was held on Saturday February 24, 2018 at the Cranford Community Center. Thirty-seven Scouts and two girls from throughout the council came to compete and test their skills.

A Swiss-system tournament is a non-eliminating tournament format which features a set number of rounds of competition. In a Swiss tournament, each competitor does not play every other person. Competitors meet one-to-one in each round and are paired using a set of rules designed to ensure that each competitor plays opponents with a similar running score, but not the same opponent more than once. The winner is the competitor with the highest aggregate points earned in all rounds. All competitors play in each round. This year’s winners were,

1st Place         Vibhav Chaturvedi of Watchung Mountain District Troop 368

2nd Place       Joshua McDonald of Raritan Valley District Troop 90

3rd Place        Miguel Aguirre of Raritan Valley District Troop 90

All participants were awarded a Munsee 2018 Chess Medal. The top three finishers were awarded a travel chess set.

Special thanks go to Joe Renna and Renna Media for sponsoring this year’s tournament. Thanks also to Jim Parlapiano for logistics coordination. John Koneski and Troop 75 for their donation of supplies and Bob Ruggeri for his time and support. Big Apple Pizza of Cranford donated 14 pizzas for lunch. Cranford/Garwood TV 35 also stopped by to videotape the action and do interviews with some of the participants.
