Open Spots in Philmont Special Treks!

I am writing to let you know about the Roving Outdoor Conservation School (ROCS) and Trail Crew Trek (TCT) opportunities at Philmont Scout Ranch. These treks are an incredible opportunity for outstanding individuals in the council that are interested in natural resource management and I would appreciate your support in spreading information about this program and encouraging youth to apply.

Each year thousands of Boy Scouts and Venturers head to Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico to backpack in the beautiful and rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Although the majority of Scouts come to this National High Adventure Base with their troops, several special treks programs allow individual Scouts to experience Philmont as they join a crew of other Scouts from across the nation.  Sometimes crews must wait for the opportunity to trek at Philmont as a home crew, however each summer spots are available in Philmont’s special treks programs for individuals who want to come to Philmont. This summer the Conservation Department still has spots open for ROCS and TCT treks and would greatly appreciate your support in filling these programs.

ROCS, is a 21-day outdoor education backpacking experience rooted in conservation and environmental science education. TCT is a 14-day experience with half of the time spent building trail and learning about project management, and half of the time on a 7-day special trek of Philmont. Throughout both ROCS and TCT participants have both structured and spontaneous lessons rooted in environmental science, visits from guest speakers, and the opportunity to work on various conservation projects with the Conservation Department and the U.S. Forest Service in the Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest.  Participants learn about ecology, forestry, geology, botany, fire ecology, wildlife management, and environmental policy.  Participants hone their stewardship as they practice Leave No Trace principles throughout both Philmont and the Valle Vidal.  Both male and female ROCS sessions are available throughout the summer, and TCT is a co-ed experience.  For a look at what ROCS participants have to say about their time on the trail, check out the REI promotional video at and hear from TCT participants at

For more information, including session dates and fees, please consult the applications (ROCS & TCT). The cost for experiencing Philmont as a ROCS (~$525) or TCT (~$325) participant is significantly lower than that of trekking at Philmont as part of a troop or council contingent. If you would like some promotional materials or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

All the Best,
