Junior Solar Sprints Competition, Hosted by the STEM Committee

Making science come alive and be fun is what TransOptions’ Junior Solar Sprints (JSS) is all about.  For the 13th year, this free, environmental education event will challenge middle school students to put on their thinking caps and collaborate to design, build and race solar powered model cars.  For the first time, Patriots’ Path Council of BSA is partnering with TransOptions to allow teams of Scouts to participate. Each team will learn about solar power, design, build, and test their car, then race it against other cars in organized competitions.  The Junior Solar Sprint challenge is a great STEM opportunity: learning about solar power while having FUN!

Come to the council service center in Cedar Knolls Sunday, Sept. 21 from 2-4 PM for an information session, demonstration, and sign up. Teams can be 2-4 Scouts who are in 6th-8th grade and must reside in Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union or Warren counties.

All participants will spend the first part of the program learning, designing, building and testing their model cars.  Junior Solar Sprints culminates in a divisional race based on location and an overall champion is crowned at an inter-county final race, all held in May.

Register at Doubleknot:

Note: this event is free to Scouts.
