Scout Venture Crews & YEC to run the 7th Annual Council-Wide Blood Drive

On “Black Friday”, November 29th  Scout Venture Crew #77 (VC-77) & and our Youth Executive Committee (YEC) will again lead a Council-Wide Blood Drive supported by our Patriots’ Path Council, BSA, and Colonial Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Originally motivated by the story of a former Boy Scout in Tennessee that was undergoing a kidney transplant, and had to provide his own blood supply, VC-77 decided to help out. This has led to six previous drives, and 490 viable pints collected to date.

In fact, 2011 allowed us to secure over 100 viable pints in a single year for the first time in our history. Last year, we collected 129 viable pints!

This is important as each pint supports up to 3 people, which goes a long way in helping to reduce our requirements during one of the year’s most difficult travel weekends. New Jersey is considered the worst state in the Union when it comes to the critical “need to supply” ratio.

Our goal for this year is to secure 200 viable pints.

2013 brings about another positive change and expansion of the drive. VC-77 is (again) joined by the Patriots’ Path Council’s Youth Executive Council (YEC) and Venture Crew 75 from Cranford. This year our team is joined by the NJ Sharing Network in New Providence led by VC-378 and Explorer Post 368.

Here are our current locations:

•VC-77
Madison Elks Lodge #1465
192 Main Street in Madison
10 a.m. – 3 p.m

•YEC
Patriots’ Path Council Service Center
1 Saddle Road
Cedar Knolls, NJ 07927
10 a.m. to 3 p.m

•VC-75
Cranford United Methodist Church
201 Lincoln Avenue – East
Cranford, NJ 07016
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

•VC-378 & Post 368
NJ Sharing Network
691 Central Ave
New Providence, NJ 07974
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The eventual goal remains to have seven or more drives spanning the entire five counties supported by the council.  So, interested units can contact us.

Our Scouts have gone through several levels of training – provided without cost by the local Chapter of the American Red Cross (Colonial Crossroads), which has allowed them to positively support the technicians, also provided by Colonial Crossroads.

** Please note that appointments are necessary so that the Red Cross can provide enough Blood Technicians to keep the lines moving!!

Uniform Update

Effective October 1, 2013, the official stance on the Boy Scouts of America’s uniform policy is that shirts are to be worn tucked in, regardless of whether the wearer is a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, or adult Scouter. All Sea Scout uniforms are designed to be tucked in except youth dress whites and youth dress blues. In the past, guidelines have simply stated the uniform wearer should be neat in appearance. Neatness includes tucking in the shirt. This update will appear in related resources, such as the uniform inspection sheets, as they are revised and printed.

UPDATED GUIDE TO ADVANCEMENT!

The newly updated 2013 Guide to Advancement is the official source for administering advancement in all Boy Scouts of America programs: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Venturing, and Sea Scouts.

This item replaces The Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures and Advancement and Recognition Policies and Procedures.

This edition is a major revision with many text changes that will render the existing book obsolete.

Soft cover; 96 pages; 3-hole punched for your convenience.  $9.99

An excellent reason to stop by our new, expanded Scout Shop in Cedar Knolls!

Youth and Adult Venturing Training

Calling all youth and adult Venturers to come out to training on November 3, 2013.

For the adults, come attend Venturing Leader Specifics while your youth take Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews.  Venturing Leadership Specifies is a required course to be trained as an Advisor or associate Advisor.  It will provide an introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Venturing crew leadership experience.  For more information and to register, click here.
